Pressure is mounting on the African Union to intervene following renewed xenophobic attacks in South Africa that have triggered widespread concern across the continent.
The incidents, which have reportedly targeted foreign nationals including Ghanaians, have reignited debate over African unity and the responsibility of governments to protect all residents regardless of origin.
Growing Calls for Action
Kenneth Ashigbey, Convenor of the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey, expressed strong disappointment over the situation, describing it as a troubling contradiction of Africa’s shared history.
“It is really sad for Africa… for a country that Ghana supported… to now be applying this same thing on Ghanaians,” he said.
Ashigbey further called for urgent diplomatic engagement at the highest level, urging Ghana’s leadership to escalate the matter.
“The President must be speaking with his South Africa counterpart and the AU should be convening to say this is unacceptable.”
Government Response
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, confirmed that South African authorities have acknowledged the situation and pledged action.
According to him, the South African government has:
“expressed regret and assured that it will investigate… and take steps to nip these condemnable acts in the bud.”
The assurance is seen as an attempt to ease tensions and prevent further escalation, although concerns remain about the safety of affected communities.
A Test of African Unity
The renewed violence has raised deeper questions about the strength of Pan-African ideals—principles once championed by leaders such as Kwame Nkrumah and Nelson Mandela.
Observers note that xenophobic attacks undermine decades of efforts to promote unity, cooperation, and free movement across African states.
For many, the situation represents not just a security issue, but a moral challenge for the continent.
