Macklemore Speaks Out After Being Dropped From Ed Sheeran’s Tour
Rapper says his pro-Palestine message cost him his place on the tour, but insists equality “should never be controversial.”

American rapper Macklemore has broken his silence after being removed from the remaining dates of Ed Sheeran’s U.S. Loop Tour, saying he has no regrets about using the stage to speak in support of Palestine.
The controversy erupted after Macklemore opened for Sheeran during concerts at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where he performed his protest song Hind’s Hall and declared “Free Palestine” while images from Gaza were displayed on giant screens. The performance sparked widespread debate and prompted calls for his removal from the tour.
Why was Macklemore dropped?
According to tour promoter Messina Touring Group, several stadiums scheduled to host Ed Sheeran’s tour informed organizers they would not allow Macklemore to remain on the lineup. The promoter said continuing with the original schedule risked the cancellation of multiple stadium concerts, potentially affecting hundreds of thousands of fans.
Following discussions with venues and stakeholders, the decision was made to remove Macklemore from all remaining support dates of the tour.
Macklemore: “I’m not the victim”
In a lengthy statement posted on Instagram, Macklemore defended both his performance and his message, insisting that advocating for equal human rights should never be viewed as controversial.
The rapper said he understands Ed Sheeran’s position and emphasized that he does not blame the British singer personally. Instead, he claimed pressure from influential stadium owners and organizers ultimately led to his removal.
Macklemore also stressed that he does not see himself as the victim in the situation, arguing that the real focus should remain on civilians affected by the conflict in Gaza.
A friendship tested by politics
Despite the fallout, Macklemore revealed that he and Ed Sheeran have been friends for more than a decade and expressed hope that the disagreement would not permanently damage their relationship.
He acknowledged that Sheeran has generally avoided political controversies throughout his career, but said he personally felt a moral responsibility to speak out during performances that reached tens of thousands of people.
The wider controversy
The dispute has divided fans and fellow musicians.
Supporters argue that artists should be free to use their platforms to advocate for humanitarian causes, while critics say a family concert is not an appropriate venue for political messaging. Singer Pink was among the high-profile figures who criticized Macklemore’s performance, later clarifying that she supports both Jewish safety and Palestinian human rights while condemning Hamas.
The controversy has also reignited a broader debate within the entertainment industry over the balance between free expression, political activism and commercial touring.
What happens next?
Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour will continue with its remaining U.S. stadium dates, but without Macklemore as the opening act. Neither Sheeran nor his management has publicly criticized the rapper, and the tour promoter has maintained that the decision was driven by venue restrictions rather than artistic differences.
For Macklemore, however, the message remains unchanged. He says losing the tour was worth it if it helped bring greater attention to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, adding that “wanting all humans to be treated equal should never be controversial.”
