Rally firmly behind Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for 2028 victory – Afenyo-Markin charges NPP communicators

Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on communicators of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to unite behind the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, as preparations intensify towards the 2028 general elections.

According to Mr Afenyo-Markin, the NPP’s efforts to return to government will require more than election-day mobilisation. He stressed the importance of sustained grassroots engagement, disciplined communication, unity and consistent work among party members.

He made the remarks while addressing participants at the 2026 Communication Officers’ Boot Camp, organised by Leadership House in partnership with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and the Patriotic Institute at the Anagkazo Campus in Mampong.

Calls for unity and disciplined communication

Speaking to the communication officers, Afenyo-Markin said the party must build strong and lasting relationships with voters at the grassroots if it is to regain power.

He emphasised that electoral success is developed over time through continuous engagement with communities rather than being determined solely at polling stations.

“True success is forged not just at the polling station, but through the deep relationships we build and sustain at the grassroots, backed by disciplined public engagement, unity, collective spirit, and continuous hard work,” he said.

The Effutu MP also urged NPP communicators to exercise greater responsibility in their public engagements, particularly in an era where misinformation and unverified claims can quickly spread through social media.

He cautioned communication officers against disseminating fake news and encouraged them to ensure that information shared in the name of the party is accurate and responsible.

According to him, rebuilding public confidence in the NPP will require a communication strategy based on facts, discipline and constructive engagement.

Afenyo-Markin backs Bawumia

A central part of Afenyo-Markin’s message was his call for party communicators to rally behind Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, whom the NPP has selected to lead the party into the 2028 presidential election.

“My charge to every Communication Officer present was clear and resolute: rally firmly behind Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as we strengthen our grassroots engagement and work together towards victory in 2028,” he said.

The call forms part of a broader push within the NPP for unity behind its flagbearer as the party seeks to recover from its defeat in the 2024 presidential election.

Afenyo-Markin has repeatedly urged NPP members and supporters to put internal differences aside and focus on rebuilding the party. In March, he similarly called for the NPP to work towards securing a decisive parliamentary majority in 2028 to support a Bawumia-led government.

NPP’s road to 2028

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia previously led the NPP as its presidential candidate in the 2024 general election, where he was defeated by National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate John Dramani Mahama.

The NPP subsequently selected Dr Bawumia again as its flagbearer for the 2028 election, placing him at the centre of the party’s strategy to return to power.

Afenyo-Markin has consistently argued that unity will be critical to achieving that objective. In June, he called on NPP supporters to rally behind Bawumia and warned that internal divisions could undermine the party’s chances in 2028.

The Minority Leader’s latest comments therefore place significant responsibility on the party’s communication officers, who are expected to serve as a bridge between the NPP’s leadership and voters across the country.

With the 2028 election still ahead, the party is expected to intensify its grassroots activities, messaging and organisational preparations as it seeks to convince voters to return it to government.

For Afenyo-Markin, however, that campaign must be anchored in unity, responsible communication and sustained engagement with the Ghanaian electorate.
