Canada Funds Major UN Peacekeeping Training in Ghana as Military Officers From Eight African Nations Gather in Accra

A new Canadian-funded peacekeeping initiative is strengthening Africa’s role in global security, with military officers from eight African countries participating in an advanced United Nations observer training programme at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) in Accra.
The two-week programme brings together personnel from Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Malawi, Kenya, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Zambia, creating a regional platform to prepare the next generation of instructors for UN peacekeeping missions across the world.
A Canada–Ghana partnership for global peace
The training is being delivered under the United Nations Integrated Training Service (UNITS) Train-the-Trainer Military Observer Course, with financial support from the Government of Canada and technical collaboration with the United Nations.
Rather than training only peacekeepers, the programme focuses on preparing trainers—experienced military officers who will return to their respective countries to educate future UN military observers using internationally recognized standards.
Why this training matters
Military observers are among the most important personnel deployed during United Nations peacekeeping operations.
Unlike combat troops, they monitor ceasefires, investigate security incidents, support conflict prevention, report developments to the UN and help build confidence between parties in conflict.

Located in Accra, the centre regularly hosts military, police and civilian professionals from across the continent, making Ghana an important contributor to international peacekeeping capacity.
