Yutong Bus Vanished by Fire on Mankessim-Accra Highway
Electrical fault suspected as blaze consumes Yutong bus and destroys passengers’ belongings

A passenger bus travelling along the busy Mankessim–Accra Highway was completely destroyed after it caught fire in the early hours of Wednesday, leaving passengers stranded but miraculously escaping without injuries.
The incident involved a Yutong commercial bus, which was engulfed in flames before emergency responders arrived at the scene. Thick smoke and intense flames consumed the vehicle, reducing it to a burnt shell within a short period.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), firefighters responded immediately after receiving a distress call and worked tirelessly to contain the blaze. Their swift intervention prevented the fire from spreading to nearby vehicles and surrounding vegetation, averting what could have become a far more serious disaster.
Passengers Escape Safely
Although the bus was completely destroyed, all passengers and the driver managed to evacuate safely before the fire intensified.
Firefighters were able to salvage a small number of personal belongings from the vehicle, but most luggage and commercial goods—including crates of beverages being transported—were lost in the inferno.
Authorities confirmed that no injuries or fatalities were recorded.
Preliminary Investigations
Initial investigations by fire officials indicate that the blaze was most likely triggered by an electrical fault within the vehicle.
Investigators are expected to carry out further examinations to establish the exact cause of the fire and determine whether mechanical defects or maintenance issues contributed to the incident.
Renewed Calls for Vehicle Safety
The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns about the condition of commercial vehicles operating on Ghana’s highways.
Road safety experts say routine electrical inspections and regular maintenance are essential to preventing similar incidents, particularly on long-distance passenger buses that travel hundreds of kilometres daily.
Transport operators have also been encouraged to ensure that fire extinguishers and emergency safety equipment remain functional on board, while drivers are urged to conduct pre-trip mechanical checks before setting off.
Fire Service Urges Preventive Maintenance
The Ghana National Fire Service continues to encourage commercial transport operators to prioritise preventive maintenance, especially electrical systems, which remain one of the leading causes of vehicle fires across the country.
Officials believe increased awareness, routine inspections and strict adherence to maintenance schedules will significantly reduce the risk of highway fire incidents and improve passenger safety.
As investigations continue, the incident serves as another reminder of the importance of roadworthiness and preventive maintenance in protecting lives and property on Ghana’s roads.
