A legal dispute between U.S. President Donald Trump and Capital One has taken a dramatic turn after the bank disclosed in court filings that it closed more than 300 bank accounts linked to the Trump Organization following an internal anti-money laundering (AML) review.

The disclosure comes as Capital One seeks to dismiss a lawsuit filed by the Trump Organization, which alleges that the bank terminated its accounts for political reasons following the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Bank Denies Political Motivation

In its court filing, Capital One said the decision to close the accounts was made after months of analysis by its anti-money laundering specialists and was carried out in accordance with banking regulations and internal compliance policies.

The bank said the transaction patterns identified during its review matched types of activity that federal banking guidance requires financial institutions to examine closely. However, Capital One did not accuse the Trump Organization of engaging in money laundering or any criminal offence.

Trump Organization Disputes the Claims

The Trump Organization and Eric Trump have maintained that the accounts were closed because of political bias and what they describe as “debanking” in the aftermath of the January 6 Capitol riot.

Their lawsuit argues that Capital One targeted the company because of its political affiliation rather than legitimate banking concerns.

Trump’s legal team has continued to insist that the account closures were politically motivated and has vowed to pursue the case in court.

More Than 300 Accounts Affected

According to the court filings, the accounts were closed in 2021, affecting a wide range of Trump Organization businesses, including golf courses, hotels, wineries and other commercial operations.

Capital One said it provided advance notice and gave the company several months, along with extensions, to move its banking activities elsewhere before the accounts were officially closed.

Legal Battle Continues

The dispute is part of a broader legal campaign by President Trump against major financial institutions.

He has also filed a separate lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase, alleging that it similarly discriminated against him by closing accounts because of his political views. The banks have denied those allegations, stating that account closures are based on legal, regulatory and financial risk—not politics.

What the Court Will Decide

The case now centers on whether the Trump Organization can prove that the account closures were politically motivated or whether Capital One acted within its rights under U.S. banking regulations.

The bank is asking the court to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing that the evidence supports its position that the closures resulted from a routine compliance review rather than discrimination.

The outcome could have broader implications for how financial institutions manage politically exposed clients and how courts interpret claims of “debanking” in the United States.

GhanaianNewsCanada will continue to follow the case as it proceeds through the U.S. legal system.
