President Mahama Delivers Replacement Vehicles to Retired Military Commanders
President fulfils pledge by handing over Toyota Land Cruisers to former Ghana Armed Forces commanders after withdrawal of retirement armoured vehicles

President John Dramani Mahama has fulfilled a promise to retired senior military officers by presenting them with new replacement vehicles following the withdrawal of armored vehicles that had previously been allocated to them as part of their retirement benefits.
The presentation took place at the General Headquarters of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) in Accra on Friday, July 31, 2026, where the current Chief of the Defense Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General William Agyapong, handed over Toyota Land Cruisers on behalf of the President to the immediate past CDS, General Thomas Oppong-Peprah (Rtd), and several former Service Commanders.
A Promise Honored
The replacement vehicles were provided after the government withdrew the armored vehicles that had earlier been issued to the retired commanders.
President Mahama subsequently assured the former military leaders that they would receive alternative vehicles in recognition of their years of dedicated service to Ghana and their contribution to national security. The latest presentation fulfils that commitment.
Recognizing Distinguished Service
During the handover ceremony, Lieutenant General William Agyapong commended the retired commanders for their professionalism, sacrifice and leadership throughout their military careers.
He also outlined ongoing efforts by the Ghana Armed Forces to improve personnel welfare, modernize infrastructure and strengthen the operational readiness of the military through investments in logistics, accommodation and equipment.
Retired Officers Express Gratitude
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, former Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Frederick Asare Kwasi Bekoe (Rtd) thanked President Mahama for honoring his pledge.
He described the presentation as a demonstration of the government’s appreciation for the dedication and sacrifices made by retired military personnel in protecting Ghana’s peace and security.
Air Marshal Bekoe also praised the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces for implementing reforms aimed at improving the welfare of serving personnel while enhancing the effectiveness of the military.
Part of a Broader Military Welfare Agenda
The presentation of the replacement vehicles forms part of the Mahama administration’s broader agenda to improve the welfare and operational capacity of the Ghana Armed Forces.
Earlier this year, the government announced the payment of more than GH¢1 billion in outstanding military gratuity arrears owed to retired personnel, introduced new salary scales for service members, and commissioned accommodation projects and additional vehicles to strengthen military operations.
Government officials say these initiatives are intended to boost morale, recognize the sacrifices of military personnel and ensure the Armed Forces remain well-equipped to respond to Ghana’s evolving security challenges.
