Alberta is set to become a major player in the global artificial intelligence revolution after technology giant Meta announced plans to invest more than C$13 billion to build its first data centre in Canada.

The massive project, known as the Sturgeon Data Centre, will be located in Sturgeon County, north of Edmonton, and represents one of the largest private-sector technology investments in Canadian history. The facility is expected to strengthen Canada’s position in the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence sector while creating thousands of employment opportunities during construction.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and other digital platforms, said the facility will be designed to support the company’s growing artificial intelligence computing needs as demand for advanced AI technology continues to accelerate worldwide.

A Major Boost for Alberta’s Technology Future

The announcement marks a significant shift for Alberta, a province traditionally known for its energy industry but now seeking to establish itself as a destination for global technology investment.

The new AI data centre will have approximately 1 gigawatt of computing capacity, with the ability to expand further in the future. Meta says the project will include advanced infrastructure capable of supporting next-generation artificial intelligence systems.

Alberta officials welcomed the investment, describing it as evidence that the province can attract world-class technology companies by combining energy resources, industrial capacity and a favourable business environment.

The provincial government has been actively working to attract large-scale data centre developments as global technology companies compete for the computing power required to build and operate artificial intelligence systems.

Thousands of Jobs and Local Investment

The project is expected to create significant economic activity in the region.

During construction, the facility is projected to support more than 3,000 construction jobs, while more than 300 permanent positions are expected once the data centre becomes fully operational.

Beyond the data centre itself, Meta has committed additional funding toward local infrastructure improvements, including roads and water systems, helping support surrounding communities.

For residents of Sturgeon County and the wider Edmonton region, the development represents a major opportunity for economic growth, new skills development and increased investment.

Powering the Future of Artificial Intelligence

One of the biggest challenges facing large AI data centres is energy demand.

The Sturgeon facility will require significant electricity capacity, and Meta plans to support new power infrastructure to meet the project’s needs. The company has partnered with energy developers to support future power generation, including a natural gas-powered facility designed to provide reliable energy for the centre.

The project has also raised discussions about sustainability, as governments and communities continue to examine how to balance technological advancement with environmental responsibility.

Meta has stated that the facility will use water-efficient cooling technology, including a closed-loop cooling system designed to reduce reliance on local water sources.

Alberta Joins the Global AI Race

Artificial intelligence has become one of the most competitive areas of global innovation, with governments and technology companies investing heavily in computing infrastructure.

From healthcare and education to business, cybersecurity and scientific research, AI is expected to transform many sectors of the economy.

Meta’s Alberta investment places Canada firmly within that global race, providing the infrastructure needed to develop and operate advanced AI technologies.

Opportunities and Concerns

While the announcement has been welcomed by government and business leaders, the scale of the project has also generated discussions about energy consumption, environmental impact and the long-term effects of large technology facilities on local communities.

Some residents and environmental advocates have raised concerns about electricity demand and the pressure such projects could place on existing infrastructure. Others argue that careful planning and investment can allow Alberta to benefit from the economic opportunities created by the AI boom.

A New Chapter for Canada’s Digital Economy

Meta’s decision to establish its first Canadian data centre in Alberta represents more than a technology investment—it signals a new chapter in Canada’s digital transformation.

As artificial intelligence continues reshaping industries around the world, Alberta is positioning itself not only as an energy powerhouse but also as an emerging centre for innovation and advanced technology.

For Canada, the project represents a major step toward building domestic AI capacity. For Alberta, it could mark the beginning of a new economic era where energy, technology and innovation converge.

The future of artificial intelligence is being built today—and Alberta wants to be at the centre of it.
