President John Mahama has returned to Ghana from an official visit to France ahead of an emergency cabinet meeting scheduled to address the rising cost of fuel.

The meeting is expected to focus on measures to cushion Ghanaians from the impact of rising fuel prices, largely attributed to ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

Government is seeking immediate interventions to ease the burden on households and businesses.

During his visit, President Mahama co-chaired the 2026 One Health Summit alongside French President Emmanuel Macron. The summit addressed global health, environmental, and sustainability challenges.

On the sidelines, bilateral talks were held focusing on economic partnerships, energy, and development cooperation.

The emergency meeting is expected to outline practical steps to stabilise fuel prices and mitigate economic effects.

Analysis & Commentary | Boakye Stephen

This development highlights a recurring structural weakness: Ghana’s economic sensitivity to external shocks.

The Middle East conflict influencing Ghanaian fuel prices underscores a lack of energy sovereignty. Leadership response is swift, but fundamentally reactive.

The deeper issue is not fuel pricing, it is strategic dependency. Until Ghana controls production, storage, and distribution frameworks, such emergencies will remain cyclical.
