Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has successfully hosted the Fourth Edition of “A Day with the Diplomatic Corps,” bringing together members of the diplomatic community, their families and international partners for a celebration of unity, cultural diversity and friendship in Accra.
The annual event took place on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at the Ghana Armed Forces Sports Complex in Burma Camp under the theme “Unity in Diversity: Connecting Countries, People and Cultures.” It offered diplomats a rare opportunity to step away from formal negotiations and engage through sports, music, food and cultural exchange.
Diplomacy beyond meeting rooms
Opening the celebration, Ambassador Khadija Iddrisu, Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, described the occasion as a cherished family day that allows diplomacy to take on a more personal and human dimension.
She said sports and recreation help reduce stress, strengthen relationships and build friendships that ultimately support stronger diplomatic cooperation between nations. Ambassador Iddrisu also noted that the event’s theme reflects Ghana’s commitment to connecting people across different cultures and nationalities through mutual respect and shared experiences.
She paid tribute to diplomats, their spouses and children, describing families as important pillars behind the work of diplomacy and international relations.
Ambassadors celebrate unity through sport
The Deputy Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Kufa E. Chinoza, thanked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ghana Armed Forces for organizing the gathering and providing the facilities.
Ambassador Chinoza said the event allowed diplomats to exchange their offices for playing fields and connect as friends, neighbours and fellow human beings rather than representatives of different governments.
He added that in a world facing increasing global challenges, the celebration demonstrated that people from diverse countries and continents can remain united through their shared commitment to service, humanity and cultural understanding.
Sports, culture and cuisine unite nations
Beyond the sporting competitions, the celebration featured a vibrant cultural and culinary exhibition showcasing traditional dishes and flavours from participating countries.
Diplomats and guests sampled international cuisine while enjoying musical performances and family-friendly activities, creating an atmosphere that reflected the diversity of the diplomatic community in Ghana.
Organizers noted that the previous edition attracted around 1,000 participants, and this year’s celebration aimed to build on that success with even greater participation and stronger international friendships.
Government and partners support the initiative
The Ministry expressed appreciation to numerous sponsors and institutions that supported the event, including Kasapreko, Coca-Cola, Special Ice, Africa World Airlines, Bank of Ghana, UBA, BOST, Kenya Airways and several private-sector partners whose contributions helped make the celebration possible.
Strengthening Ghana’s diplomatic ties
The Fourth Edition of A Day with the Diplomatic Corps reinforced Ghana’s reputation as a welcoming hub for international diplomacy by demonstrating that meaningful relationships can be strengthened not only through official meetings, but also through shared moments of sport, culture and community.
As diplomats returned to their respective missions, the event served as a reminder that lasting international partnerships are often built on friendship, mutual understanding and the celebration of cultural diversity.
