Tensions flared during a meeting of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Executive Committee (NEC) as disagreements emerged over recent “Ken Must Go” protests and the party’s internal direction following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

The meeting, held at the party’s headquarters in Accra, reportedly witnessed heated exchanges among some executives and party members over the demonstrations targeting former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and broader concerns about the party’s future.

Sources within the party indicated that differing views on accountability, leadership, and the handling of internal grievances contributed to the tense atmosphere, exposing lingering cracks within the opposition party as it seeks to rebuild ahead of the 2028 elections.

The “Ken Must Go” campaign, which first emerged during the NPP’s tenure in government, reflected dissatisfaction among sections of the party and the wider public over economic management and the role played by Mr. Ofori-Atta during his time as Finance Minister.

At the NEC meeting, some members reportedly argued that the party must openly confront issues that contributed to its electoral defeat, while others cautioned against actions that could further deepen divisions within the party.

Party insiders say the discussions became particularly animated when participants debated whether the protests against Mr. Ofori-Atta had damaged party unity and public confidence in the NPP.

The developments come at a crucial period for the NPP, which has embarked on a process of introspection and reorganization following its loss of power in the 2024 elections. The party is also seeking to consolidate support behind its newly elected leadership and chart a path toward the 2028 polls.

Political analysts say the disagreements highlight the broader challenge facing the NPP as it attempts to balance demands for accountability with efforts to maintain cohesion among its various factions.

Despite the tensions, party officials have repeatedly stressed the importance of unity and reconciliation as the NPP prepares to reposition itself as an effective opposition force.

Observers believe the manner in which the party manages internal disagreements in the coming months could significantly influence its prospects ahead of the next general election.
