Summer in Canada is often described as a season of renewal—a welcome break from the long, cold winter months. For many seniors, it is a time to reconnect with friends, embrace the outdoors and celebrate the simple joys of community.

That spirit was on full display as the Ghanaian-Canadian Seniors Association hosted its annual Summer BBQ & Picnic at the beautiful Chinguacousy Park in Brampton, Ontario, bringing together dozens of elderly Ghanaians for a memorable day of laughter, fellowship and cultural celebration.

The event transformed one of Brampton’s most popular parks into a vibrant gathering place where Ghanaian culture blended seamlessly with the warmth of the Canadian summer.

From the early afternoon, families and seniors arrived dressed in colourful summer outfits, greeting one another with hugs, smiles and heartfelt conversations.

Many of the participants, including members in their 70s and 80s, proved that age is no barrier to living an active and joyful life.

A celebration of food and togetherness

No Ghanaian gathering is complete without delicious food, and this year’s picnic delivered exactly that.

The air was filled with the irresistible aroma of freshly grilled barbecue, while tables overflowed with jollof rice, kelewele, grilled chicken, sausages, salads and traditional Ghanaian delicacies that reminded many attendees of home.

As seniors shared meals together, conversations flowed effortlessly—from memories of growing up in Ghana to stories about raising children and grandchildren in Canada. The picnic became more than a social event; it became a bridge connecting generations and preserving cultural identity.

More than a picnic — a family reunion

For many members of the association, the annual gathering is one of the highlights of the year.

Old friends who had not seen each other for months reunited under the shade of the park’s trees, while newcomers were warmly welcomed into the community.

Some participants enjoyed friendly games and light exercises, while others simply relaxed, listening to Ghanaian music and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.

“Our seniors have served both Ghana and Canada with dedication. Summer gives them the opportunity to come outside, breathe fresh air, laugh together and feel young again. This is what community is all about,” one of the organisers told GhanaianNewsCanada.

The atmosphere reflected the values of respect, unity and togetherness that continue to define the Ghanaian diaspora across Canada.

Supporting seniors’ wellbeing

Beyond the food and entertainment, organisers emphasised the importance of the event for the mental, emotional and physical wellbeing of elderly Ghanaians.

Canada’s long winters can leave many seniors isolated indoors for extended periods, making outdoor community activities especially meaningful during the summer months.

The Ghanaian-Canadian Seniors Association believes regular social gatherings help reduce loneliness, encourage active living and strengthen the support network available to elderly members of the community.

By creating opportunities for seniors to remain socially engaged, the association continues to play an important role in improving the quality of life of Ghanaian elders living in the diaspora.

Preserving Ghanaian culture in Canada

The picnic also highlighted how cultural traditions continue to thrive thousands of kilometres away from Ghana.

Through music, language, traditional cuisine and shared values, the event reminded participants that while they now call Canada home, their Ghanaian heritage remains a cherished part of their identity.

Younger family members who attended the celebration also had the opportunity to interact with elders, listen to their stories and experience the rich traditions that have shaped the Ghanaian community abroad.

A day to remember

As the sun slowly set over Chinguacousy Park, the laughter, music and conversations continued, leaving many already looking forward to next year’s gathering.

The 2026 Summer BBQ & Picnic was more than an outdoor celebration—it was a powerful reminder that community, friendship and cultural pride remain at the heart of the Ghanaian-Canadian experience.

For everyone who attended, the message was unmistakable: the spirit of Ghana is alive and flourishing in Brampton, and the community’s seniors continue to inspire it with grace, resilience and joy.
