The Ghana Police Service has arrested four field officers of Bills Micro-Credit Limited following a widely circulated video showing a confrontation between the officers and a woman at Ashongman Estate in Accra.

The incident drew national attention after footage shared on social media captured the officers arguing with the woman over an alleged unpaid loan of GH¢300.

During the confrontation, one of the officers was seen taking the woman’s mobile phone, triggering a struggle as she attempted to retrieve it while carrying a baby.

In the video, the woman, later identified as 42-year-old Hagar Emaser, is seen trying to recover her phone while still holding the child before losing her balance and falling to the ground.

The footage quickly spread across social media platforms, sparking public outrage and widespread calls for an investigation into the conduct of the microcredit officers.

In a statement issued on March 15, 2026, the Accra Regional Police Command confirmed that the Kwabenya District Police Command had launched investigations after the victim lodged a formal complaint.

According to the police, the woman reported that the four officers visited her residence on March 13, 2026, to demand repayment of the loan and allegedly assaulted her during the encounter.

The suspects have been identified as Denis Wornyo, 38; Albert Amarh, 40; Ebenezer Amartei, 23; and Atsu Lawson, 27.

Police say the four suspects were arrested on Sunday, March 15, and are currently in custody assisting investigators.

Meanwhile, Bills Micro-Credit Limited has announced that the officers involved have been immediately suspended following the incident.

In a statement, the company indicated that the suspension was ordered by its board of directors as both internal investigations and police inquiries continue.

The Accra Regional Police Command has encouraged members of the public who experience assault or similar offences to report such incidents promptly to enable swift investigations and appropriate legal action.

The incident at Ashongman Estate has sparked a wider conversation about the methods sometimes used by microfinance institutions and loan recovery agents in dealing with financially vulnerable clients.

Microcredit institutions play an important role in providing small loans to individuals who may not have access to traditional banking services. However, the growing number of complaints about aggressive loan recovery tactics raises concerns about the protection of borrowers’ rights.

While financial institutions have legitimate interests in recovering loans, debt collection must always be conducted within the boundaries of the law and with respect for human dignity.

The involvement of a mother carrying a child during the confrontation has further heightened public concern, as many observers believe such situations require greater sensitivity and professionalism.

The case also highlights the increasing influence of social media in exposing incidents that might otherwise remain unnoticed, often prompting quicker responses from authorities.

As investigations continue, the outcome of the case may serve as an important reminder that loan recovery practices must adhere to legal and ethical standards, ensuring that financial disputes do not escalate into situations that compromise the safety and dignity of citizens.
