Hidden Danger on the Roads: NRSA Warns Against Converted ‘Voxy’ Vehicles

Road safety authority raises concerns about structural modifications and passenger safety

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has issued a strong warning to the public against the use of converted Toyota Voxy vehicles, citing serious safety concerns linked to their modification for commercial transport.

According to the authority, many of these vehicles, originally designed as private multi-purpose vehicles, are being altered to carry additional passengers, often without adherence to approved safety standards.

Officials say such modifications compromise the structural integrity of the vehicles, increasing the risk of injury or fatalities in the event of accidents.

The NRSA indicated that the conversion process frequently involves altering seating arrangements, removing safety features, and overloading the vehicle beyond its intended capacity.

These practices, the authority noted, pose significant dangers not only to passengers but also to other road users.

The warning comes amid the growing popularity of converted Voxy vehicles in Ghana’s informal transport sector, where operators seek cost-effective alternatives to traditional commercial vehicles.

However, regulators emphasize that economic considerations should not override safety requirements.

The NRSA has urged transport operators and the general public to avoid using such vehicles and to prioritize roadworthy options that meet regulatory standards.

It also called for stricter enforcement of existing road safety regulations to address the increasing presence of improperly modified vehicles on Ghana’s roads.

Authorities say ongoing monitoring and collaboration with law enforcement agencies will be intensified to ensure compliance and reduce risks associated with unsafe transport practices.

Road safety experts have long warned that the use of unapproved vehicle modifications contributes to road traffic accidents, particularly in situations involving high passenger loads and long-distance travel.

The NRSA reiterated its commitment to promoting safer road use and protecting lives through continuous public education and enforcement measures.
