Avi Lewis has been elected leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP), securing a decisive first-ballot victory as the left-leaning party seeks to rebuild following recent electoral losses.

Lewis won the leadership race with approximately 56% of the vote, defeating several contenders in a contest that concluded at the party’s convention in Winnipeg.

His election marks a significant shift for the NDP, which is attempting to regain political relevance after suffering one of its weakest performances in recent federal elections.

A former journalist and documentary filmmaker, Lewis enters the role without prior elected office experience, making him a notable outsider in Canada’s political leadership landscape.

In his victory remarks, he signaled a push toward more progressive policies aimed at addressing inequality and economic challenges, while positioning the party as a distinct alternative to both the governing Liberals and opposition Conservatives.

Lewis’ platform includes proposals such as expanding public services, tackling housing affordability, and increasing state involvement in key sectors of the economy.

The leadership change comes at a critical moment for the NDP, which currently holds a reduced presence in Parliament and faces pressure to reconnect with voters amid shifting political dynamics in Canada.

Political observers say Lewis’ leadership could redefine the party’s direction, though challenges remain, including rebuilding electoral strength and establishing a stronger national presence.
