Chinese President Xi Jinping has reaffirmed Beijing’s close strategic relationship with Pakistan during high-level talks with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Beijing, describing the partnership between the two nations as “unbreakable” amid growing geopolitical tensions across Asia and the Middle East.
The meeting, held at the Great Hall of the People on Monday, focused on expanding bilateral cooperation, regional stability, economic development, and diplomatic efforts surrounding ongoing tensions involving Iran and the United States.
According to Chinese state media, President Xi praised the longstanding relationship between China and Pakistan, describing the partnership as an “all-weather strategic cooperative partnership” built on decades of mutual trust, political support, and economic collaboration.
Xi reportedly emphasized China’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Pakistan in key sectors including agriculture, industry, artificial intelligence, infrastructure development, and education. The discussions also touched on regional security cooperation and broader economic partnerships linked to China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who is on an official visit to China from May 23 to 26, described China and Pakistan as “iron brothers,” reaffirming Islamabad’s support for deeper bilateral ties and long-term cooperation between the two countries.
Sharif was accompanied during the visit by Pakistan’s army chief, General Asim Munir, who has reportedly played a central role in regional diplomatic discussions involving Iran and the United States. Pakistan has recently emerged as an active mediator in attempts to reduce tensions between Washington and Tehran amid fears of broader instability in the Middle East.
President Xi commended Pakistan’s efforts toward regional peace and acknowledged Islamabad’s role in diplomatic initiatives aimed at restoring stability in the Middle East. Chinese officials reportedly view Pakistan’s engagement as important due to Beijing’s close strategic relationship with Iran and its growing interest in regional security arrangements.
The meeting also comes at a time of increased global diplomatic activity involving China. In recent weeks, Beijing has hosted several high-profile international leaders amid ongoing tensions surrounding trade disputes, regional conflicts, and shifting global alliances.
Economic cooperation remained a major focus during Sharif’s visit. Just days before the Beijing meeting, Pakistani and Chinese companies reportedly signed cooperation agreements worth approximately $1.22 billion during a business conference in Hangzhou attended by Sharif and senior Chinese officials.
Analysts say the continued strengthening of China-Pakistan relations reflects both countries’ broader strategic interests, particularly in trade, infrastructure development, regional security, and energy cooperation. Pakistan remains a key partner in China’s Belt and Road Initiative through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), one of Beijing’s largest overseas infrastructure projects.
The latest meeting further signals Beijing’s intention to reinforce alliances across Asia as geopolitical competition intensifies globally, especially amid growing uncertainty surrounding U.S.-China relations and regional security dynamics.
