In a rare and direct diplomatic admission, Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Roey Gilad, has issued a formal apology following a military strike that injured three Ghanaian UN peacekeepers in Lebanon.
Addressing the March 6 incident, the Ambassador stated:
“We are very sorry for the incident that took place on the 6th of March.”
He further revealed:
“On the 17th of March, we sent a letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs here… in which we took full responsibility for the fire that was done by a mistake, by an error.”
The Ambassador insisted the strike was not intentional, describing it as part of the complexities of urban warfare. He blamed Hezbollah militants for operating dangerously close to UN positions:
“Hezbollah is taking, unfortunately, UNIFIL for a ride… they shoot against us and they escape.”
He added:
“Trying to challenge the source of the fire… indeed, we hit the base by mistake. But this is a pattern.”
Israel has since urged that Ghanaian troops be repositioned, calling their current location “the most dangerous place” in South Lebanon.

An apology, though necessary, does not erase the gravity of what occurred. Ghanaian peacekeepers represent discipline, neutrality, and sacrifice on the global stage.
When such forces are caught in geopolitical crossfire, it raises a critical concern:
Note: Are peacekeepers truly protected, or merely exposed in modern warfare?
