Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has officially ceased to be a member of Ghana’s Council of State after President John Dramani Mahama accepted her resignation.

The announcement was made by Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who disclosed that Justice Akuffo submitted her resignation letter in September 2025.

According to government officials, several attempts were made by members of the Council of State to persuade her to reconsider her decision.

“The Council of State engaged her extensively, but eventually advised that her resignation be accepted,” Mr Kwakye Ofosu explained.

Justice Akuffo did not publicly state the reasons behind her decision.

The Council of State serves as an important advisory body that assists the President on governance, constitutional and national development matters.

Government says the constitutional process for replacing her has already commenced.

A Distinguished Career

Justice Akuffo served as Ghana’s Chief Justice from 2017 until her retirement in 2020 and remains one of the country’s most respected legal figures.

Her departure leaves a notable gap within the Council’s advisory framework.

Analysis

Although resignations from the Council of State are uncommon, the government’s handling of the matter appears measured and constitutionally compliant. The appointment of a replacement will likely attract public attention due to the importance of the role.

Commentary | Boakye Stephen

Sophia Akuffo’s departure marks the end of an influential chapter in Ghana’s governance landscape. Regardless of differing political opinions, her contributions to the judiciary and public service remain significant. Government should ensure that her successor possesses comparable experience and integrity.
