In a rare public political statement, First Lady Melania Trump has appealed for peace and unity amid widespread protests and unrest in Minneapolis, Minnesota, following the fatal shootings of two civilians by federal immigration agents.

Speaking on national television on Tuesday, Mrs. Trump urged demonstrators to express their grievances peacefully and called on Americans to come together in a time of deep tension. “I’m calling for unity,” she said, emphasising the importance of calm in the midst of ongoing demonstrations. “I’m against violence, so please, if you protest, protest in peace,” she added, noting that collaboration between local and federal officials is critical for restoring calm.

Her remarks came as protests have intensified in recent weeks following the January 25 shooting of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care unit nurse, by a U.S. Border Patrol agent — the second such fatal shooting this month after the killing of Renee Good earlier in January. Video footage shared widely on social media has contradicted official claims that Pretti posed a violent threat, leading to growing public criticism.

Mrs. Trump’s televised appeal acknowledged ongoing talks between her husband, President Donald Trump, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey aimed at reducing tensions. She highlighted reports that federal immigration officers are being scaled back from the city as part of efforts to de-escalate the situation.

Analysts say it is unusual for the First Lady to make a political statement of this nature, underlining the severity of the crisis unfolding in Minneapolis and the national focus on debates over federal immigration enforcement.

The unrest has drawn national attention and criticism from both sides of the political spectrum, with demands for accountability and policy shifts growing louder as community protests continue.
