Fresh controversy has emerged over the arrest of former National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) Chief Executive Officer Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba, after his wife publicly appealed for information on his whereabouts, saying the family has been left without any official communication since he was detained at Kotoka International Airport.

According to his legal team, Aludiba was arrested shortly before boarding a flight to the United Kingdom despite having obtained permission from the High Court to travel for a scheduled medical appointment. The arrest has since sparked a legal and political dispute over whether law enforcement acted within the boundaries of the court’s order.

Wife Appeals for Information

Speaking through the family’s legal representatives, Aludiba’s wife expressed concern that neither relatives nor lawyers had been informed of where he was being held after his arrest.

She described the situation as distressing for the family, insisting that every individual in state custody deserves access to legal representation and that relatives should be informed of their location.

The family’s appeal has intensified public interest in the case, with legal observers questioning whether due process has been fully respected.

Attorney-General Explains Arrest

Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem Sai has defended the arrest, stating that investigators acted after receiving information that Aludiba allegedly attempted to access funds in a bank account that had been frozen as part of ongoing criminal proceedings.

According to the Deputy Attorney-General, authorities believe an attempt was made to use false means to withdraw money from the account shortly before the planned trip abroad. The Attorney-General’s office has also indicated it intends to challenge the High Court’s earlier decision granting permission for the former NAFCO boss to travel.

Defence Rejects Allegations

Aludiba’s lawyers have strongly denied the allegations, insisting their client complied fully with the court’s travel conditions.

Lead counsel Godfred Yeboah Dame argues that there was no valid court order freezing his client’s bank account and has challenged prosecutors to produce evidence that any money was actually withdrawn.

The defence has further announced plans to initiate contempt proceedings against the Attorney-General, Deputy Attorney-General and other officials, alleging that the airport arrest violated a valid High Court order.

Trial Continues

The former NAFCO CEO remains before the courts on charges including stealing and causing financial loss to the state, allegations he has consistently denied.

The latest arrest has added another layer of legal complexity to a case that has already attracted nationwide attention because of its political significance and the large sums of public funds allegedly involved.

Growing Questions

As the legal battle intensifies, attention is shifting beyond the criminal allegations themselves to broader questions about the balance between judicial authority and executive law enforcement powers.

With the family demanding answers, the defence preparing fresh court action and prosecutors defending the arrest, the coming days are expected to prove crucial in determining both the legality of the airport operation and the future direction of one of Ghana’s most closely watched corruption cases.
