Calgary: Six Ghanaian-Canadian Churches Organize Soccer Tournament

Six churches in Calgary organized the first Ghanaian-Canadian Churches of Calgary Men’s Soccer Tournament on Saturday, August 19, 2023. The event, held at Valleyview Park in southeast Calgary,   was aimed at bringing churches in the city together, encouraging fitness and unity, as well as winning new souls and backsliders back to the Lord.

The six churches that participated in the Tournament were: the American Mission Church (Lighthouse Chapel), Church of Pentecost Calgary, Calvary Praise Church, Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Shalom Congregation, Calgary, Bethel Methodist Church, and the Church of Pentecost Airdrie.

Gracing this historic occasion were Dr Charles Odame-Ankrah, President of the Ghanaian Canadian Association of Calgary, Apostle & Bishop McNeil, Pastor Afoakwa Badu, Pastor Richard Adjei, Pastor Edward Ameyaw, Pastor Akwasi Bennie, and other community leaders.

In the final game, the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Shalom Congregation, Calgary, won on penalty shootout after tying The Church of Pentecost Calgary. Bethel Methodist Church also overcame the Church of Pentecost Airdrie on penalty shootouts.

Thus the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Shalom Congregation, Calgary, The Church of Pentecost Calgary, and Bethel Ghana Methodist Church came in first, second, and third places respectively and were awarded the championship Trophy and medals. It is hoped this will be an annual event and will be expanded into other age groups and sporting activities amongst the churches in the community.
