Canada’s dream run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup continued on Sunday as the co-hosts secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa, booking a historic place in the Round of 16 for the first time in the country’s history.

A tense and fiercely contested Round of 32 encounter at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, appeared destined for extra time until midfielder Stephen Eustáquio produced a moment of brilliance deep into stoppage time to break South African hearts and send Canadian supporters into wild celebrations.

The winning goal came in the second minute of added time when Eustáquio unleashed a superb strike from outside the penalty area, finally beating South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who had frustrated the Canadians for much of the match with a series of outstanding saves.

Canada dominated possession for large spells and created numerous scoring opportunities, but Bafana Bafana’s disciplined defensive display kept the hosts at bay for almost the entire contest. South Africa, making their own historic push in the knockout stages, defended resolutely and looked capable of forcing extra time before the late breakthrough.

Head coach Jesse Marsch praised his players after the final whistle, hailing them as national heroes for achieving another milestone in Canadian football history. The victory marks Canada’s first-ever win in the knockout stage of a senior men’s FIFA World Cup.

The Canadians were further boosted by the long-awaited World Cup debut of captain Alphonso Davies, who returned from injury to make an appearance in the second half. Davies’ introduction energized the team as Canada increased the pressure in search of a decisive goal.

The victory continues a remarkable tournament for the co-host nation, which has already captured the imagination of football fans across Canada. After progressing from the group stage, Sunday’s triumph ensures that Canada’s historic World Cup journey will continue into the Round of 16.

Canada will now face either Morocco or the Netherlands in the next round as they seek to extend what has already become the country’s most successful FIFA World Cup campaign.

For South Africa, the defeat brings an end to an inspiring tournament run. Despite the heartbreak, Bafana Bafana leave the competition having earned widespread admiration for their resilience, organization, and fighting spirit on football’s biggest stage.
