June 2026 Recorded Highest Rainfall Since 1995, Says Interior Minister Muntaka
Government steps up flood response as unprecedented rains leave communities inundated and major roads disrupted

Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka has revealed that Ghana experienced its highest June rainfall in more than three decades, describing the downpours recorded in June 2026 as the most intense since 1995.
Speaking as emergency agencies intensified flood response operations across affected communities, the Minister said the exceptional volume of rainfall had overwhelmed drainage systems, triggered widespread flooding, and disrupted transportation in several parts of the country.
The unprecedented rains have inundated homes and businesses, displaced residents, and rendered sections of major highways impassable, including parts of the Winneba–Cape Coast Highway, where floodwaters stranded hundreds of travellers and brought traffic to a standstill.
Muntaka noted that the severity of this year’s rainfall highlights the increasing challenges posed by extreme weather events and underscored the need for stronger disaster preparedness and long-term investment in resilient infrastructure.
In response to the flooding, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), working alongside the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces, has intensified rescue and evacuation operations in affected communities. Emergency teams have been deployed to relocate stranded residents, assess damaged properties, and provide relief assistance to vulnerable households.
Authorities have urged residents living in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain vigilant, comply with evacuation directives where necessary, and avoid attempting to cross flooded roads or drains.
The Ghana Meteorological Agency has also warned that further rainfall is expected in parts of the country, raising concerns that flood conditions could worsen if heavy downpours persist.
Disaster management experts say the recurring floods demonstrate the urgent need to improve urban drainage systems, enforce planning regulations, and invest in climate-resilient infrastructure capable of withstanding increasingly frequent extreme weather events.
As emergency operations continue, government agencies have appealed to the public to cooperate with rescue personnel and promptly report emergencies, while assuring affected communities that relief efforts will remain ongoing until the situation stabilizes.
