DAVOS, Switzerland — U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in the Swiss Alpine resort of Davos on Tuesday amid heightened diplomatic tension, following a series of blunt remarks targeting European leaders and institutions ahead of his appearance at the World Economic Forum (WEF).

Trump’s visit comes as trade disputes, security concerns and geopolitical rivalries dominate the annual gathering of political and business elites, with his confrontational rhetoric already overshadowing discussions on economic cooperation and global growth.

In the days leading up to the summit, Trump publicly criticized European governments over trade practices, defense spending and regulatory policies, reviving long-standing disagreements between Washington and its allies. His remarks have drawn pushback from European officials, who accuse the United States of undermining multilateral cooperation.

At the center of the latest dispute is Greenland, a Danish territory. Trump has again linked the issue to trade relations, warning that Washington could impose new tariffs on several European countries unless U.S. interests are met. Denmark and the European Union have firmly rejected any suggestion of U.S. control over the island, describing it as non-negotiable.

European leaders attending the forum say the U.S. stance risks escalating into a broader trade conflict at a time when the global economy remains fragile. Some officials have warned that retaliatory measures could follow if Washington moves ahead with tariff threats.

Trump, however, has defended his approach, arguing that tariffs are a legitimate policy tool and part of a broader effort to protect U.S. national and economic interests. His administration has increasingly framed tariffs as a geopolitical instrument, alongside sanctions and export controls.

The president has also used the run-up to Davos to praise U.S. economic performance, pointing to growth, employment and investment figures as evidence that his policies are working. He has contrasted this with slower growth in parts of Europe, saying other economies should adopt similar approaches.

Security around Davos has been tightened following protests in several Swiss cities ahead of Trump’s arrival. Demonstrators criticized U.S. foreign policy and what they describe as the growing use of economic pressure and unilateral decision-making in international affairs. Swiss police reported clashes with protesters in some areas.

Despite the tensions, U.S. officials say Trump will use his address to promote what he calls an “America First” economic agenda, emphasizing national sovereignty, trade rebalancing and domestic industrial growth. His speech is expected to draw close attention from global markets and policymakers.

Analysts say Trump’s presence has already reshaped the tone of the summit, shifting focus away from consensus-building toward confrontation over trade rules, alliances and global leadership.

As Trump prepares to take the Davos stage, many attendees are bracing for a speech that could further test relations between the United States and its allies, with implications that may extend well beyond the Swiss mountains.
