Police uncover large Tramadol consignment at Widana, arrest 21-year-old suspect

By Boakye Stephen, Kumasi, Ghana | Reporting for Ghanaian News Canada

Police have intercepted approximately 500 cartons of Tramadol during an intelligence-led operation at Widana and arrested a 21-year-old Burkinabe national in connection with the suspected drug operation.

The operation was conducted at about 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 18, by personnel from the Police Intelligence Directorate together with an operational team known as “The Black Cobra.”

Police said the operation followed approximately one month of intelligence gathering into suspected activities involving the importation and distribution of illicit pharmaceutical drugs.

The seized Tramadol, reportedly comprising different brands, was discovered in a privately operated warehouse as well as residential properties.

The suspect has been identified as Abdul Ali, 21, and is currently assisting investigators.

Preliminary intelligence gathered by the police reportedly points to the involvement of foreign nationals from Mali, Togo, Burkina Faso and Senegal in the alleged importation chain.

Investigators further suspect that Widana may have been functioning as a transit and distribution point from which the drugs were moved to other locations.

The police have not indicated that all persons from the countries mentioned are involved; the information concerns individuals allegedly connected to the suspected network.

Investigations are continuing to establish the identities of other suspects and determine the structure and extent of the alleged distribution operation.

Commentary

The seizure highlights the importance of intelligence-led policing in tackling organised drug trafficking.

The quantity involved also makes the investigation significant beyond the arrest of one suspect. Authorities will need to determine the source of the consignment, its intended destinations, the financiers behind the operation and the wider distribution network.

Until investigations and any subsequent court proceedings are completed, allegations against persons who have not been arrested or charged should not be treated as established facts.
