The Ghana Education Service has confirmed a reported sexual assault involving a student of Bolgatanga Girls Senior High School, with two school watchmen arrested and handed over to the police.

The Service disclosed the development in a statement issued on Thursday, August 20, following reports concerning the incident at the Upper East Region school.

GES said preliminary information indicated that the student is a special-needs student who was on medication and required medical attention when the incident reportedly occurred.

The two watchmen have been placed under arrest and are assisting the police with investigations.

GES management has also interdicted both individuals with immediate effect.

The Service said a full investigation is underway and that appropriate sanctions would follow depending on the outcome of the inquiry and applicable Ghanaian law.

“Thorough investigations into the matter are currently ongoing,” the GES said.

The Service has further reminded personnel within the education sector of their responsibility to protect students and maintain professional standards.

It stressed that conduct capable of threatening the safety, dignity or welfare of students would not be tolerated.

GES has consequently assured parents, guardians and the wider public that the matter is receiving serious attention.

The statement was signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations at the Ghana Education Service.

Commentary

The allegations are particularly serious because schools are expected to provide a secure environment for students, especially those who may require additional care and protection.

At the same time, the allegations remain subject to investigation. The arrests and interdictions should therefore not be treated as proof of guilt. The police investigation and any subsequent legal process must establish exactly what occurred and determine responsibility.
