New Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow to be sworn-in on July 12

Toronto’s Mayor-elect, Olivia Chow will be sworn into office on Wednesday 12 July, 2023, cutting the usual transition period by weeks.

Chow secured a hard-fought victory with a slim margin of approximately 35,000 votes beating fierce competition from six most likely candidates.

The mayor-elect has already hit the ground running by hiring her campaign director Michal Hay as Chief of Staff.

Former mayor John Tory’s surprising resignation in February launched the by-election, which created a condensed timeline for the winner to take office.

Experts who follow city hall closely say this transition period will be different from previous changes in Toronto’s top office.

Olivia Chow becomes the first Asian Canadian person to lead the City of Toronto.
