The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially renamed its national headquarters in Accra as “Jerry Rawlings House” and unveiled a bust in honour of the party’s founder, the late former President Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, as part of activities commemorating what would have been his 79th birthday.
The ceremony, held at the party’s headquarters on Monday, brought together senior party officials, members of the Rawlings family, cadres, supporters, and government officials to celebrate the legacy of the former military leader and statesman, whose political career shaped Ghana’s Fourth Republic.
President John Dramani Mahama led the commemorative event and paid tribute to Rawlings for his contribution to Ghana’s democratic development, describing him as a visionary leader whose ideals continue to guide the NDC and inspire generations of Ghanaians.
The unveiling of the bust and the renaming of the headquarters formed part of a broader programme organised jointly by the NDC and the J.J. Rawlings Foundation under the theme, “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy.”
Addressing the gathering, party leaders said the decision to rename the headquarters was intended to preserve Rawlings’ legacy and remind current and future generations of his role in the establishment and growth of the NDC. They noted that Rawlings’ commitment to social justice, probity, accountability, and grassroots mobilisation remains central to the party’s philosophy.
Rawlings, who founded the NDC in 1992, served as Ghana’s Head of State from 1981 to 1992 and later as the country’s first President under the Fourth Republic from 1993 to 2001. He died on November 12, 2020, leaving behind a political legacy that continues to influence national discourse.
As part of the commemorative activities, the party also scheduled a public lecture and exhibition at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, where speakers reflected on Rawlings’ contribution to democratic governance, national development, and Pan-Africanism. Prominent lawyer and academic Tsatsu Tsikata was expected to deliver the keynote address.
The NDC has further declared June as “NDC Month” as part of efforts to institutionalise activities celebrating the ideals and contributions of its founder.
