Mahama: Greatest Tribute to Atta Mills Is to Live by His Values
President urges Ghanaians to honour late leader through integrity, humility and selfless service rather than words alone
ACCRA, Ghana — President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to honour the legacy of the late President John Evans Atta Mills not merely with annual commemorations, but by embracing the values that defined his life and leadership.
Speaking during activities marking the 14th anniversary of the passing of the former President, Mahama described Prof. Mills as a statesman whose commitment to peace, humility, integrity and national unity remains a model for public service in Ghana.
“The greatest tribute to Atta Mills is to uphold his values,” President Mahama said, stressing that the late leader’s legacy should be reflected in the daily conduct of public officials and ordinary citizens alike, rather than in speeches or ceremonial events alone.
A Legacy Built on Peace and Integrity
Mahama noted that Prof. Mills earned widespread admiration for his calm leadership style, respect for democratic principles and commitment to serving Ghanaians without bitterness or vindictiveness.
He said the late President consistently placed the national interest above partisan politics, making him one of Ghana’s most respected democratic leaders.
According to Mahama, Ghana’s current and future leaders should emulate those same principles of accountability, humility and ethical leadership.
Values That Still Matter
The President said the ideals championed by Atta Mills remain relevant as Ghana works to strengthen its democracy and rebuild public confidence in state institutions.
He urged Ghanaians to recommit themselves to honesty, patriotism, discipline, justice and compassion, arguing that lasting national progress depends as much on values as on economic development.
Mahama has repeatedly maintained that sustainable development cannot be achieved without integrity and moral leadership, describing ethical conduct as the foundation of national transformation.
Commemorating a National Leader
This year’s remembrance included a commemorative lecture, wreath-laying ceremony at Asomdwee Park, and other activities organised by the J.E.A. Mills Memorial Heritage to celebrate the former President’s life and service to Ghana.
The organisers emphasised that the anniversary was intended to celebrate Prof. Mills as a national figure whose principles transcend political divisions.

Mahama concluded by urging Ghanaians to preserve Atta Mills’ legacy by promoting peace, tolerance and responsible leadership.
He said the former President’s greatest gift to Ghana was not only the policies he implemented, but the example he set through his character—an example that continues to inspire the nation 14 years after his passing.
