Former U.S. President Donald Trump has praised Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to fighting terrorism and addressing insecurity in the country, signalling a renewed focus on security cooperation between Washington and Abuja.

In a letter to President Tinubu, Trump acknowledged Nigeria’s efforts to confront violent extremism and expressed support for stronger collaboration between the two countries in tackling security challenges. The development comes after months of discussions between Nigerian and U.S. officials over how to respond to threats posed by extremist groups and other armed actors.

The relationship between the two leaders has seen a major shift. Previously, Trump had criticised Nigeria’s handling of violence affecting Christian communities and warned that stronger action was needed. Nigerian authorities, however, maintained that insecurity affects citizens across religious and ethnic lines and requires a broader counter-terrorism approach.

The latest engagement highlights increased cooperation between the United States and Nigeria, including intelligence sharing, military training support and coordinated security efforts.

A Political Win for Tinubu?

Supporters of President Tinubu say Trump’s recognition shows that Nigeria’s security reforms are receiving international attention. They argue that global partnerships are essential as Nigeria continues battling threats from extremist groups, banditry and criminal networks.

However, critics have questioned whether the praise reflects measurable improvements on the ground or simply recognition of the Nigerian government’s commitment. Some opposition voices argue that acknowledging determination should not be confused with complete success in defeating insecurity.

Nigeria’s Security Challenge

Nigeria has faced years of security challenges, including attacks linked to Boko Haram and Islamic State-affiliated groups, as well as widespread kidnapping and armed violence in parts of the country. Analysts say solving the crisis requires not only military action but also stronger governance, economic opportunities and community-based solutions.

The renewed U.S.-Nigeria partnership represents one of the most significant international efforts supporting Nigeria’s fight against terrorism in recent years.
