Former U.S. President Donald Trump has praised Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to fighting terrorism and addressing insecurity in the country, signalling a renewed focus on security cooperation between Washington and Abuja.

In a letter to President Tinubu, Trump acknowledged Nigeria’s efforts to confront violent extremism and expressed support for stronger collaboration between the two countries in tackling security challenges. The development comes after months of discussions between Nigerian and U.S. officials over how to respond to threats posed by extremist groups and other armed actors.

The relationship between the two leaders has seen a major shift. Previously, Trump had criticised Nigeria’s handling of violence affecting Christian communities and warned that stronger action was needed.
