MTN Ghana Scraps E-Levy Charges on MoMo Transactions Following Tax Repeal

Accra, Ghana – April 3, 2025 – MTN Ghana has officially announced the removal of the 1% Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) on all Mobile Money (MoMo) transactions, following the government’s decision to repeal the tax.
In a message sent to customers on Thursday, April 3, MTN Ghana confirmed that the E-Levy deductions will no longer apply to MoMo transfers. The announcement comes just a day after President John Dramani Mahama signed a new tax bill into law on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, effectively abolishing the E-Levy, betting tax, and emission tax.

MTN Ghana’s CEO, Stephen Blewett, had previously addressed public concerns about the timeline for implementing the E-Levy removal. Speaking at MTN House in Accra on April 2, he assured Ghanaians that while the government had approved the repeal, telecom operators needed to follow regulatory procedures before ceasing levy deductions.
With the latest move by MTN Ghana, MoMo users can now enjoy seamless transactions without any E-Levy deductions. The removal of the tax is expected to boost mobile money usage and ease financial transactions across the country.
This decision marks a significant shift in Ghana’s digital financial landscape, as citizens welcome the relief from E-Levy charges, which had been a major concern since its introduction.
