NDC 2028 Race Wide Open as Ato Forson, Asiedu Nketia Tie in New Poll
Ato Forson and Asiedu Nketia emerge neck-and-neck as party members weigh their options for the next presidential election.

A new opinion poll has revealed that the race to lead the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) into Ghana’s 2028 general election has become one of the closest political contests in recent years, with Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia now tied as the party’s preferred presidential hopefuls.
The latest Global InfoAnalytics survey found that both leading contenders command 31% support among voters, suggesting there is currently no clear frontrunner for the NDC’s future leadership. The findings indicate that the contest remains wide open despite months of speculation over who could eventually succeed President John Dramani Mahama as the party’s presidential candidate.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu placed third with 15%, while Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang secured 9%. Chief of Staff Julius Debrah followed with 8%, with Agriculture Minister Eric Opoku and former UPSA Vice-Chancellor Prof. Joshua Alabi each receiving 2% support.
Race tightens significantly
The latest survey reflects a dramatic shift in the NDC’s internal dynamics.
Earlier polls among party delegates showed Asiedu Nketia holding a comfortable lead over Ato Forson. However, the Finance Minister has steadily gained support over recent months, gradually closing the gap before eventually drawing level in the newest nationwide poll.
Political analysts say the results suggest that both men have built strong support bases, making the eventual NDC presidential primary highly competitive if both decide to contest.
Election simulations favour the NDC
Beyond measuring internal party popularity, the poll also tested possible 2028 presidential election scenarios.
According to the survey, both Ato Forson and Asiedu Nketia would comfortably defeat leading opposition figures in hypothetical presidential contests, although Ato Forson recorded slightly stronger projected national numbers in some matchups.
The findings are expected to intensify discussions within the governing party as attention slowly shifts from governance toward preparations for the next national elections.
Still no official contenders
Despite the growing public debate, neither Dr. Ato Forson nor Johnson Asiedu Nketia has officially declared an intention to contest the NDC’s presidential primaries.
With nearly two years before the party is expected to begin selecting its next flagbearer, political observers believe alliances, government performance and internal party developments could still reshape the race significantly.
For now, however, the Global InfoAnalytics poll suggests one thing clearly: the battle for the NDC’s 2028 presidential ticket is far from settled.
