Kenyan government to launch affordable smartphones, boosting digital inclusion

The Information Communication and Technology (ICT) Cabinet Secretary, Eliud Owalo, announced that the government has completed feasibility studies and is now prepared to embark on this transformative journey.
With an unwavering commitment to bridging the digital divide, Kenya aims to make smartphones accessible to every individual, irrespective of their economic status. Owalo stated, “We are very soon rolling out in the market our first batch of locally assembled smartphones,” expressing his enthusiasm for this game-changing initiative.
To ensure widespread affordability, the smartphones will be priced at a mere $40 (equivalent to approximately Sh. 5,516). This move is set to revolutionise the accessibility of government services, which have become increasingly digital-centric, allowing Kenyans from all walks of life to conveniently access these essential resources.
Recognising the hindrance posed by exorbitant smartphone costs, the Kenyan government has taken a decisive step by venturing into local smartphone production. Manufacturing these devices within the country effectively removes the barriers preventing many citizens from embracing the digital realm.
Kenya’s efforts are complemented by the extensive digital infrastructure already in place nationwide, making it imperative to provide affordable smartphones to maximise its potential. The distinguished Konza Technopolis in Machakos County has been chosen as the hub for assembling these low-cost smartphones, amplifying the local production ecosystem.
