A Canadian snowboarder has died following a serious accident at a ski resort in Japan’s Niigata Prefecture, after falling into a waterfall basin while riding outside designated ski areas, according to local authorities.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon at a mountain resort in Minamiuonuma City, a popular winter sports destination known for its steep terrain. The woman, who was visiting Japan from Canada, had been snowboarding with a companion when she reportedly left the marked course and disappeared from view.
Search and Rescue Operation
Resort staff were alerted when it became clear that the snowboarder had not returned from the off-trail area. Emergency services were contacted, and a search operation involving local firefighters and rescue personnel was launched later in the afternoon.
Difficult terrain and winter conditions complicated access to the site. Rescuers eventually located the woman in a basin at the base of a waterfall several hours after the initial alert. She was unconscious at the time of recovery and was transported to a nearby medical facility, where she was later pronounced dead.
Medical officials said the cause of death was consistent with severe chest trauma sustained during the fall.
Investigation Ongoing
Japanese police have opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident, including how the snowboarder came to leave the marked trail and fall into the basin. Authorities noted that the area where the incident occurred is not intended for public skiing or snowboarding.
Officials have not indicated any suspicion of foul play and are treating the case as an accidental death.
Safety Reminders Issued
Local authorities and ski resort officials have once again urged visitors to remain within designated courses, warning that off-piste areas can contain hidden hazards such as cliffs, waterways, and sudden drops that may be obscured by snow.
Mountain safety experts say accidents involving off-trail skiing and snowboarding often require complex rescue operations and can quickly become life-threatening due to terrain and delayed access to emergency care.
Canadian Officials Notified
Canadian officials have confirmed they are aware of the incident and are providing assistance to the victim’s family while working with local authorities in Japan. No further details have been released out of respect for the family’s privacy.
