Volta Lake Tragedy Exposes Persistent Safety Gaps as Nine Confirmed Dead in Boat Capsizing Incident

At least nine people have been confirmed dead and two others remain missing following a boat accident on the Volta Lake in the East Gonja District.
The tragedy occurred around 5:30 pm on April 8, 2026, between Sikakope and Mataiko along the Yeji-Congo route, when a passenger boat carrying 14 people capsized reportedly due to bad weather conditions.
Out of those onboard, seven bodies have so far been recovered, two women and five children, while five males were rescued alive. One woman and one child remain missing as search and rescue operations continue.
A critical safety concern has emerged in the aftermath of the accident, as:
“none of the passengers were wearing life jackets at the time of the accident.”
This recurring detail highlights a long-standing challenge in inland water transport safety across Ghana, where compliance with life jacket usage remains inconsistent despite repeated public warnings.
Emergency response teams continue search operations, working alongside local authorities to locate the missing persons and provide support to affected families.
While investigations are ongoing, the combination of poor weather conditions and safety non-compliance is expected to be central to the final findings.
