A Texas man accused of murdering his pregnant wife allegedly escaped the United States through Canada before boarding an Air Canada flight to Italy using suspected false travel documents, according to investigators and court records.
Lee Gilley, who was facing trial in Texas over the death of his wife, Heidi Gilley, is now at the center of an international legal and extradition battle after authorities traced his alleged escape route through Canadian airports into Europe.
According to reports from U.S. and Canadian media, Gilley had been released on bond while awaiting trial in Texas but was required to wear a court-ordered ankle monitor as part of his release conditions.
Investigators allege that shortly before trial proceedings were scheduled to begin, Gilley removed the monitoring device and disappeared from U.S. authorities.
Officials later discovered evidence suggesting he had crossed into Canada before traveling onward to Italy.
Reports indicate that Gilley allegedly boarded an Air Canada international flight from Canada to Milan using what authorities believe were fraudulent Belgian identity documents.
The case drew major attention after investigators revealed the suspected escape involved multiple jurisdictions, international travel systems, and alleged document fraud.
Italian authorities later detained Gilley after concerns reportedly emerged regarding the authenticity of his travel documents during checks conducted after his arrival in Europe.
Court records suggest he is now fighting extradition efforts aimed at returning him to the United States to face prosecution.
The murder case itself dates back to the death of Heidi Gilley, who was reportedly found dead inside the couple’s Texas home in 2023.
Prosecutors allege Lee Gilley killed his wife while she was pregnant, accusations he has denied.
The prosecution reportedly argues that evidence gathered during the investigation strongly links him to the death and that his alleged flight from the United States demonstrates consciousness of guilt.
Defense lawyers, however, have continued challenging aspects of the case while also contesting extradition proceedings in Italy.
The international nature of the investigation has raised broader questions about border security, international travel monitoring, and how individuals facing serious criminal charges can allegedly move across countries while under legal supervision.
Authorities in both the United States and Canada are now examining how Gilley was able to travel internationally despite being under court monitoring conditions.
The case has also placed attention on airline security procedures and identity verification systems following allegations involving fake travel documentation.
Air Canada has not been accused of wrongdoing in the matter. However, the airline’s international route became part of the wider investigation after officials traced Gilley’s reported travel movements through Canada into Italy.
Legal experts say the extradition process could become lengthy and complex depending on Italian court rulings and the legal arguments presented by both sides.
Meanwhile, the case continues generating widespread public interest due to its combination of homicide allegations, international escape claims, cross-border investigations, and high-profile extradition proceedings.
If extradited to the United States, Gilley is expected to stand trial in Texas over the death of his wife.
Authorities have not yet indicated when final extradition decisions may be reached.
