Ireland Deports 42 South Africans in Fresh Immigration Crackdown

Ireland has deported 42 South African nationals as part of a large-scale immigration enforcement operation, with the Irish government insisting that deportation orders are essential to maintaining the integrity of the country’s immigration system. 

The group, which included nine adult men, 18 adult women and 15 children, departed Dublin on a chartered flight and arrived in Johannesburg the following day. Irish authorities confirmed that all of the children travelled with their families and were not separated from their parents during the operation. 

According to Ireland’s Department of Justice, the deportation was carried out by the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) after deportation orders had been issued by Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan. Officials said two of those removed had previous criminal convictions in Ireland, while the remaining deportees were removed under immigration laws after exhausting the legal process. 

Fourth charter flight this year

The operation marked Ireland’s fourth charter deportation flight of 2026, reflecting the government’s tougher stance on illegal immigration.

Before this latest flight, 130 people had already been removed from Ireland this year, including 67 European Union citizens deported on criminality grounds. The government says charter flights are used when groups of people are being returned to the same destination, making the process more practical than commercial flights. 

Cost of the operation

Irish authorities disclosed that the charter flight cost approximately €735,000, making it one of the country’s most expensive deportation operations this year. Officials said the amount covered the aircraft and operational logistics, while additional policing and security costs were not included in that figure. 

Government defends deportations

Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan defended the removals, saying deportation orders are a necessary part of ensuring that Ireland’s immigration system operates fairly and effectively.

He stressed that while Ireland continues to welcome people who enter and remain in the country legally, those who have no legal right to remain must comply with deportation orders after all legal avenues have been exhausted. 

Part of wider immigration reforms

The latest deportation comes as Ireland continues strengthening immigration enforcement amid rising asylum applications and increasing pressure on public services.

Government figures show that deportation enforcement has significantly increased over the past two years as authorities seek to improve compliance with immigration laws while encouraging voluntary departures where possible. 

The deportation of the 42 South African nationals is expected to remain part of the broader debate over immigration policy in Ireland, balancing humanitarian responsibilities with border enforcement and the rule of law.
