IGP Meets Ibrahim Mahama, Pledges Full Investigation Into Alleged Assault

By Boakye Stephen, Kumasi, Ghana | Reporting for Ghanaian News, Canada

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of a thorough investigation into claims by renowned Ghanaian visual artist Ibrahim Mahama that he was allegedly assaulted by police officers in Tamale on March 21, 2026.

The assurance came after a high-level meeting between Mr. Mahama and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), together with members of the Police Management Board. DCOP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director-General of Public Affairs, explained that the IGP personally engaged Mr. Mahama, listened to his account, and promised that investigations would continue.

“Following the incident in Tamale on the 21st of March, the Inspector General of Police extended an invitation to Mr Ibrahim Mahama. Today he came with a delegation to meet with the IGP and members of the Police Management Board,” she said.

She further disclosed that significant progress had already been made, with statements taken, the scene visited, and follow-ups at Mr. Mahama’s residence. The IGP has escalated the matter to ensure a more comprehensive probe by the CID Headquarters, alongside expedited action from the Police Professional Standards Bureau.

Ibrahim Mahama, who has previously had positive interactions with the police, recounted his history of collaboration, calling the incident unfortunate. DCOP Ansah-Akrofi assured that accountability will follow if wrongdoing is established.

Commentary: This case underscores a deeper national concern, the recurring reports of police misconduct. While high-profile individuals like Mr. Mahama attract attention, the principle of equality before the law demands that every citizen receives protection from abuse, and independent oversight mechanisms, such as CHRAJ, should be strengthened.
