According to weather reports, the storm dumped a significant amount of snow in a short period, with some areas recording up to 16 centimetres of accumulation. The fast-falling, heavy snow created whiteout conditions in several neighbourhoods, especially in northern parts of the city, while other areas experienced lighter snowfall or even dry roads due to the storm’s uneven pattern.
Authorities say the intensity of the snowfall caught many motorists off guard, leading to hazardous driving conditions and a spike in road accidents. Emergency crews responded to numerous collisions as visibility dropped and roads quickly became slippery and difficult to navigate. Police advised drivers to avoid unnecessary travel during the worst of the storm.
Meteorologists explained that the storm behaved like a “spring thunderstorm,” but with snow instead of rain—dumping heavy flakes in localized bands that made forecasting difficult. While some parts of Calgary saw minimal impact, other sections were heavily affected within hours.
The City of Calgary deployed road maintenance crews to major routes, working to clear snow and improve traction on priority corridors. Officials reminded residents that spring weather in the region can still bring sudden winter-like conditions and urged continued caution as temperatures fluctuate.
Although the storm is expected to ease, forecasters warn that more unsettled weather could follow in the coming days as the season transitions.
