England captain and Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has won the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or, bringing an end to England’s 25-year wait for a winner of football’s most prestigious individual award.

The 33-year-old was crowned at the ceremony held at London’s Palladium on Monday, October 26, after an outstanding 2025–26 season in which his goalscoring performances helped Bayern Munich secure domestic league and cup honours.

Kane becomes the first English player to win the award since Michael Owen claimed it in 2001, marking a major milestone for English football and a defining moment in the striker’s career.

France’s Kylian Mbappé finished second, while Barcelona’s teenage star Lamine Yamal placed third. Spain midfielder Rodri and Argentina legend Lionel Messi completed the top five, according to the reported results.

Kane’s remarkable season makes the difference

Kane’s victory was built on extraordinary consistency in front of goal.

The England international scored 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern Munich across all competitions during the 2025–26 campaign. His performances helped the German club win the domestic league and cup double, strengthening his case for the award.

He also made a significant contribution on the international stage, scoring six goals at the World Cup as England reached the semi-finals.

By the end of the season, Kane had recorded 73 goals for club and country, underlining the scale of his attacking contribution.

The Ballon d’Or recognizes more than a player’s popularity. Individual performances, achievements with the team and overall influence during the assessment period all contribute to the debate over who deserves the honour.

Kane’s combination of goals, consistency and team success ultimately proved decisive.

A long-awaited milestone for Harry Kane

For Kane, the award represents the culmination of years of hard work and persistence.

Before establishing himself as one of the world’s leading strikers, he faced challenges in his early career, including loan spells as he attempted to secure a regular place at Tottenham Hotspur.

He eventually became Tottenham’s leading goalscorer and England’s record international goalscorer before moving to Bayern Munich in 2023.

Although his individual scoring achievements were widely recognized, major team trophies had remained an important missing piece of his career.

His success at Bayern helped change that narrative, with the club’s domestic double and his exceptional goalscoring record providing a compelling case for the 2026 award.

Following his victory, Kane highlighted the importance of perseverance, saying that his journey showed young people that hard work and determination could help them achieve their ambitions.

Mbappé and Yamal miss out

Mbappé and Yamal were among the leading contenders for the award, but both finished behind Kane.

Mbappé continued to demonstrate his goalscoring ability, while Yamal’s performances established him as one of the most exciting young players in world football.

Their presence among the leading contenders reflected the depth of talent competing for this year’s prize.

However, the final result favoured Kane’s sustained output across the season, alongside his contribution to Bayern Munich’s domestic success and England’s World Cup campaign.

The result is also likely to fuel debate among football supporters about how much weight voters should give to individual statistics, major trophies and performances in international competitions.

Alexia Putellas wins third women’s Ballon d’Or

In the women’s category, Spain international Alexia Putellas won the Ballon d’Or Féminin for the third time.

Putellas was rewarded after helping Barcelona enjoy a successful 2025–26 campaign that included a treble, along with the Spanish Super Cup.

Her latest triumph adds to her previous victories in 2021 and 2022, further strengthening her position among the most decorated players in women’s football.

After spending 14 years at Barcelona, Putellas moved to Women’s Super League side London City Lionesses in July 2026.

Other notable winners

The ceremony also recognized outstanding performances in other areas of the game.

  • Men’s Young Player of the Year: Lamine Yamal, who claimed the award for the third time.
  • Women’s Young Player of the Year: Vicky López.
  • Men’s Coach of the Year: Luis de la Fuente.
  • Women’s Coach of the Year: Pere Romeu.
  • Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year: Unai Simón.
  • Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year: Cata Coll.
  • Men’s Club of the Year: Paris Saint-Germain.
  • Women’s Club of the Year: Barcelona.
  • Sócrates Award: Bukayo Saka, recognized for his humanitarian work.

The 2026 ceremony was particularly significant because it marked the 70th anniversary of the Ballon d’Or, which was first awarded in 1956. London hosted the event for the first time, with the location paying tribute to Stanley Matthews, the inaugural winner.

What Kane’s victory means for his legacy

Kane’s Ballon d’Or triumph places him among the select group of players to have won football’s highest individual honour.

For England, it ends a quarter-century wait since Owen’s victory in 2001. For Bayern Munich, it rewards a season in which one of the club’s most important players combined individual excellence with team success.

The award also reinforces the importance of sustained performance over an entire campaign. Kane’s achievement was not based on goals alone, but on the combination of prolific scoring, consistency and contributions to successful teams.

With the football world celebrating the latest winner, debate will continue over whether Kane was the right choice ahead of Mbappé, Yamal and the other leading contenders.

For now, the verdict is clear: Harry Kane has reached the summit of individual football recognition, completing a remarkable journey from a young striker fighting for opportunities to the winner of the 2026 Ballon d’Or.
