Veteran Liberal MP Chrystia Freeland officially resigned her seat in the House of Commons on Friday, Jan. 9, 2026, setting off a new round of political uncertainty in Ottawa and complicating the numbers in a closely balanced Parliament.

Freeland, who has been a prominent figure in Canadian politics for more than a decade, stepped down as the Member of Parliament for Toronto-area University Rosedale to take on a voluntary role as an economic adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The appointment which Freeland says is unpaid and focused on Ukraine’s economic recovery  sparked debate in Ottawa over whether a sitting MP should hold a position with a foreign government.

Her departure creates a vacancy in Parliament and will trigger a byelection in her riding. It also has implications for Prime Minister Mark Carney’s minority Liberal government, which was already operating without a majority and edging closer to one after several Conservative MPs crossed the floor to join the Liberals late last year.

Though the government recently survived a confidence vote and remains in power, Freeland’s exit removes a reliable Liberal seat and adds to an already fluid situation in the House of Commons, where every seat carries weight in legislative debates and confidence matters.

Opposition parties had already been vocal in criticizing the timing of Freeland’s transition. Some Conservative MPs argued she should have resigned her parliamentary seat before accepting a foreign advisory position, citing potential ethical concerns. Freeland has maintained that she sought and followed guidance from Canada’s ethics commissioner throughout the process.

A fluent Ukrainian speaker with deep ties to Ukraine’s political and cultural spheres, Freeland has long championed strong support for Kyiv and played key roles in shaping Canada’s Ukraine policy. She will also take on a separate leadership role as CEO of the Rhodes Trust in Oxford, England, later this year, cementing her shift away from Canadian electoral politics.

Her resignation marks the end of a significant chapter in Canadian politics and opens another period of adjustment for the already delicate balance in the House of Commons.
