Ohene Kwame Frimpong, the Independent Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, has reportedly been detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, Netherlands, according to an official statement from Ghana’s Parliament.

The development has generated major political attention in Ghana after parliamentary authorities confirmed that the legislator was being held by Dutch authorities following his arrival in the European country.

In a statement signed by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, Parliament disclosed that the Speaker and leadership of the House are currently in contact with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to gather detailed information regarding the incident.

The statement noted:

“The Rt Hon Speaker and the Leadership of the House are in touch with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague for detailed information on the matter.”

Authorities, however, have not officially disclosed the exact reason for the detention or whether formal charges have been filed against the MP.

The incident has triggered widespread public discussion both in Ghana and online, particularly because Mr Frimpong is a sitting Member of Parliament who only recently entered Parliament after winning the Asante Akyem North seat as an independent candidate during the 2024 general elections.

Reports circulating in sections of the media claim the detention may be linked to an international financial crime investigation allegedly involving U.S. authorities, including the FBI, though these claims have not yet been officially confirmed by Dutch authorities or Ghana’s government.

Some reports further alleged that investigators are examining suspected financial crimes involving large sums of money, including possible money laundering and online fraud activities.

However, no official court documents or formal charges have yet been publicly released regarding the allegations.

Mr Frimpong has previously denied allegations linking him to criminal activity, describing some earlier reports as attempts to damage his reputation and public image.

Before entering politics, Ohene Kwame Frimpong became known in Ghana through media and business ventures, including Salt FM and other entrepreneurial activities. He later gained national attention after defeating incumbent MP Andy Appiah-Kubi to win the Asante Akyem North parliamentary seat.

Parliament says the public will be updated as more information becomes available through diplomatic channels and ongoing engagements with Dutch authorities.

The situation is expected to remain a major political and legal issue in Ghana as citizens await official clarification surrounding the detention and any possible international investigations connected to the case.
