Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has strongly condemned Israel’s military incursion into Lebanon, describing the operation as “illegal” and calling for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further escalation in the region.
In a statement issued amid intensifying conflict in the Middle East, Carney emphasized the need to uphold international law and protect civilian lives, warning that continued military action risks deepening an already volatile situation.
“We call for an immediate ceasefire and a return to diplomatic engagement,” he said, stressing that respect for sovereignty remains a cornerstone of international relations.
The remarks place Canada among a growing number of countries expressing concern over Israel’s actions, as the conflict expands beyond its initial scope involving Iran. Analysts say the لبنان front introduces new geopolitical risks, raising fears of a wider regional war.
The Israeli operation in southern Lebanon is believed to be targeting militant positions linked to Hezbollah, a group that has been actively engaged in hostilities along Israel’s northern border. However, critics argue that the scale and nature of the incursion raise serious legal and humanitarian questions.
Carney’s statement signals a notable diplomatic stance, as Canada balances its traditional support for Israel with increasing calls for restraint and adherence to international norms. His comments also reflect mounting global pressure for a ceasefire, as civilian casualties rise and infrastructure damage worsens across affected areas.
Humanitarian organizations have warned of deteriorating conditions on the ground, with thousands displaced and critical services disrupted. Aid agencies are calling for safe corridors to deliver assistance, as well as renewed efforts toward a political resolution.
The situation in Lebanon adds another layer of complexity to an already unstable regional landscape, where tensions involving Israel, Iran, and allied groups continue to evolve. Observers note that any sustained escalation could draw in additional actors, further complicating efforts to contain the crisis.
Diplomatic channels remain active, with international partners urging restraint and dialogue. However, with military operations ongoing and positions hardening on all sides, prospects for an immediate breakthrough remain uncertain.
Carney reiterated Canada’s commitment to supporting peace efforts and working with international partners to reduce tensions, emphasizing that long-term stability can only be achieved through diplomacy rather than force.
