Afenyo-Markin Alleges ‘Grand Conspiracy’ Behind Torkornoo’s Removal, Calls for Her Reinstatement

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie and some Supreme Court judges of being involved in what he describes as a “grand conspiracy” that led to the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Speaking on Atinka TV, the Effutu MP alleged that Justice Baffoe-Bonnie had an interest in succeeding Justice Torkornoo and questioned the circumstances surrounding her removal under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.
Mr Afenyo-Markin further alleged that some members of the judiciary were involved in the process and insisted that the full circumstances would eventually emerge.
He has renewed his call for Justice Torkornoo to be reinstated, describing the proceedings that led to her removal as a “travesty of justice”.
Justice Torkornoo was removed from office in September 2025 following an Article 146 process involving allegations of misconduct. Justice Baffoe-Bonnie was subsequently appointed Chief Justice after parliamentary approval.
COMMENTARY
These are serious allegations involving the highest levels of Ghana’s judiciary and therefore demand more than political rhetoric. Allegations of conspiracy should be tested against evidence, procedure and the constitutional record. The credibility of Ghana’s judicial system ultimately depends not merely on the outcome of cases but also on public confidence that constitutional processes are transparent, independent and free from improper influence.
