A landmark addition to Ghana’s religious and community landscape has been unveiled in the Northern Region following the commissioning of Masjid Al-Noor, a newly constructed mosque in Tamale with the capacity to accommodate up to 10,000 worshippers during major Islamic gatherings.

The project was spearheaded by Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, Member of Parliament for Karaga and former Minister for Finance, who described the mosque as the fulfilment of a lifelong dream to serve both Islam and humanity. The main prayer hall seats approximately 6,000 worshippers, while the surrounding courtyard can host an additional 4,000 people, making it one of the largest Islamic prayer facilities in Ghana.

A Vision Beyond Worship

Named Masjid Al-Noor, meaning “The Light,” the mosque has been designed as more than a place of prayer.

According to Dr. Amin Adam, the facility is intended to become a centre for Islamic scholarship, community development, family counselling and youth empowerment. The complex also houses the Sheikh Adam Issah Centre for Islamic Research, an Islamic library, educational facilities and offices for the Noorul Hayat Foundation, a charitable organisation supporting humanitarian and social development initiatives.

GH¢300,000 Seed Funding Announced

During the commissioning ceremony, Dr. Amin Adam announced a donation of GH¢300,000 as initial funding to support the management and day-to-day operations of the mosque.

He expressed appreciation to the architects, engineers, contractors and community members whose efforts made the project possible, while praying that the mosque would remain a source of spiritual guidance and service for generations to come.

Bawumia Praises Community Investment

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who attended the commissioning, commended the initiative, describing the mosque as an investment not only in faith but also in education and national development.

He noted that Masjid Al-Noor has the potential to nurture future generations through religious instruction, research, moral education and community engagement, encouraging Muslims across the country to make good use of the facility.

Leaders Across Political and Religious Lines Attend

The commissioning attracted a broad cross-section of religious, traditional and political leaders, reflecting the significance of the project.

Among those present were the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, the Imam of the Abuja National Mosque, Professor Ibrahim Ahmed Maqari, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Tamale North MP Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, who praised Dr. Amin Adam for his continued investment in education and community development.

Strengthening Community Development

The completion of Masjid Al-Noor adds to a series of educational and social infrastructure projects supported by Dr. Amin Adam in northern Ghana over recent years.

Beyond serving as a place of worship, the mosque is expected to become a hub for learning, research, mentorship and community outreach, reflecting a growing trend of integrating faith-based institutions with education and social development.

For many residents of Tamale and the wider Northern Region, the new mosque represents more than an architectural achievement—it stands as a lasting investment in faith, knowledge and community service.
