Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, officially opened the Ghana AgroTech Fair 2026, a major agricultural and technology exhibition held at Independence Square in Accra.

The event, organized to promote innovation in agriculture and agribusiness, brought together farmers, investors, policymakers, and technology developers from across the country and beyond.

The fair serves as a platform to showcase modern agricultural technologies, strengthen value chains, and encourage investment in Ghana’s agricultural sector.

A Vision for a Self-Reliant Ghana

In his keynote address, President Mahama outlined a bold vision for Ghana’s economic future, emphasizing the need for the country to move away from over-dependence on imports toward a production-driven economy.

He stressed that Ghana must focus on producing, processing, exporting, and consuming what it makes in order to build a strong and resilient economy.

According to the President, agriculture remains central to this transformation and should be seen not as subsistence work but as a modern, technology-driven sector capable of creating jobs and boosting national development.

Agriculture as a Driver of Industrial Growth

President Mahama highlighted the critical role agriculture plays in Ghana’s industrialization agenda. He explained that strengthening agricultural value chains, improving agro-processing, and reducing post-harvest losses are key to unlocking the sector’s full potential.

He further emphasized that integrating technology into agriculture would enhance productivity and efficiency while opening up new opportunities for young people.

The President also encouraged stakeholders to embrace innovation, noting that modern agriculture now requires expertise in areas such as engineering, data science, and logistics.

Call for Investment in Agribusiness and Technology

The President used the platform to call on investors and financial institutions to increase their support for agribusinesses, describing the sector as both viable and scalable.

He also stressed the importance of developing locally manufactured agricultural technologies, stating that Ghana must reduce its reliance on imported machinery and systems.

According to him, investing in local agritech solutions will not only create jobs but also help retain value within the national economy.

Youth Encouraged to Explore Opportunities in Agriculture

A key highlight of the President’s speech was his call to young people to take advantage of opportunities within the agricultural sector.

He noted that agriculture has evolved beyond traditional farming and now offers career paths in innovation, agribusiness, and technology.

The AgroTech Fair, he said, provides a valuable opportunity for the youth to learn, network, and explore how they can contribute to the transformation of Ghana’s agricultural landscape.

Strengthening Collaboration for National Development

President Mahama commended the organizers, including the Ghana Export-Import Bank and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Agribusiness, for creating a platform that connects research, industry, and investment.

The AgroTech Fair is expected to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders, promote knowledge sharing, and accelerate the adoption of modern agricultural practices across the country.

Participants at the event expressed optimism that such initiatives will help position Ghana as a leader in agricultural innovation in Africa.

A Step Toward Economic Transformation

The successful hosting of AgroTech 2026 marks a significant step toward Ghana’s goal of building a more productive and self-reliant economy.

With strong government backing and increasing private sector participation, the agricultural sector is poised to play a leading role in driving sustainable growth and development.

As the event continues to gain recognition, stakeholders believe it will remain a key platform for shaping the future of agriculture in Ghana.
