A tragic road accident in the Dominican Republic has claimed the lives of two Canadian tourists and left at least 13 others injured, authorities confirmed on Monday. The incident has sent shockwaves through communities in both Canada and the Caribbean, prompting consular responses and widespread concern for international holidaymakers.

What Happened?

The crash occurred late on Sunday night when a passenger bus transporting tourists from Punta Cana International Airport toward resort areas lost control and slid off the road in the tourist-heavy region of La Romana, located east of the country’s capital, Santo Domingo.

Dominican authorities said the bus was carrying a group of foreign travelers when it veered across the roadway, resulting in a violent collision that killed two Canadians on the scene and left others seriously injured.

Canadians Among the Dead and Injured

According to the Dominican Republic’s National Health Service, the injured include eight men and five women, ranging in age from their late 30s to early 70s. Two of the more severely injured victims have been transferred to a specialized trauma hospital due to the extent of their injuries.

Canadian officials have not yet released the names of the deceased, citing family privacy and ongoing notifications. However, the Canadian Embassy in Santo Domingo confirmed that its consular staff are providing assistance to Canadians involved in the accident and are in communication with local authorities.

Tour Group and Travel Context

Travel reports indicate that the bus was moving guests from Punta Cana one of the Caribbean’s busiest gateways for holidaymakers toward their respective hotels along the coast. Many passengers were travelling with Sunwing Vacations, a well-known tour operator now part of the WestJet Group family of brands.

WestJet confirmed that the bus was operated by Nexus Tours, a contracted ground partner responsible for transportation services in several international destinations, including Mexico and the Caribbean. In a statement shared with Canadian media, the airline group expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the families of those affected.

Official Statements and Support

In reaction to the tragedy, Sunwing Vacations released a message saying its “hearts are with the families and loved ones affected by this incredibly difficult event.” The company said it was working closely with local authorities and partners to ensure that passengers receive support and care.

Meanwhile, the Canadian Embassy reiterated that its staff are on site, helping to coordinate assistance and gather details about Canadians who were on the bus. They urged anyone with loved ones in the area or impacted by the crash to contact embassy emergency services for guidance.

Caribbean Traffic Safety Concerns

The Dominican Republic has one of the highest road-traffic fatality rates in the world, according to the World Health Organization, a statistic frequently highlighted by travel safety organizations and foreign embassies. Issues such as high speed, narrow mountain roads, and inconsistent enforcement of safety laws contribute to the risks faced by vehicles especially large buses carrying tourists unfamiliar with local conditions.

What This Means for Canadian Travelers

This tragedy underscores the ever-present dangers of road travel abroad, especially in regions with heavy tourist traffic and challenging terrain. Canadian authorities routinely advise travelers to understand local road safety norms and to choose reputable transportation companies when planning holiday excursions.

Affected Canadians are encouraged to follow updates from the Canadian Embassy to the Dominican Republic and stay in contact with travel providers to get accurate information regarding support services and possible repatriation processes.

Final Thoughts

Families and communities in Canada have been left grieving, remembering those lost far from home. As investigations continue and support unfolds, this accident remains a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of travel safety no matter where in the world we go.
