The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has appealed for immediate government assistance following severe flooding caused by the controlled spillage of the Weija Dam.

Addressing Parliament, the MP described the situation in affected communities as critical, stating that floodwaters have displaced residents and submerged homes and commercial properties.

“Mr Speaker, it hasn’t been easy at all. I have been swimming for the past three days, helping people to evacuate. My people are suffering. Weija Gbawe is under siege,” he stated.

Authorities opened all five spill gates of the dam as part of routine measures aimed at controlling rising water levels and protecting the structure’s integrity. However, the release caused downstream flooding in surrounding communities.

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has confirmed that at least 85 affected residents have been relocated to temporary shelters.

Flooding linked to the Weija Dam spillage has become a recurring challenge for downstream communities over the years. The incident again raises critical questions about urban planning, drainage systems and long-term flood prevention strategies in flood-prone areas around Accra. The MP’s emotional appeal also reflects the growing humanitarian pressure on authorities as climate-related weather events intensify.
