The decision comes just days after two fatal shootings involving ICE officers sparked widespread public scrutiny and calls for greater oversight.
The temporary halt had reportedly been introduced by White House border policy officials following the fatal incidents in Texas and Maine, with the aim of reviewing officer safety procedures and enforcement practices. However, President Trump publicly rejected the pause, saying ICE should continue carrying out traffic stops while enforcing immigration laws fairly and professionally.
The controversy follows two separate incidents in which ICE officers fatally shot individuals during vehicle encounters. One shooting occurred in Maine involving a Colombian national, while another took place in Houston, Texas, involving a long-term Mexican resident. Both incidents have triggered investigations and renewed debate over the agency’s use of force during immigration enforcement operations.
The shootings have prompted criticism from civil rights advocates, lawmakers and some local officials, who have questioned ICE’s operational procedures, transparency and the limited use of body cameras during enforcement activities. Several officials have called for independent investigations into the incidents before normal enforcement tactics fully resume.
Despite those concerns, President Trump maintained that traffic stops remain essential to identifying and apprehending individuals who are in the United States illegally and argued that the strategy contributes to public safety and crime reduction.
