A routine passenger flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned into a terrifying mid-air emergency on Wednesday after a co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain inside the cockpit, leaving the aircraft in a dangerous descent and forcing an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
At the centre of the dramatic incident was Captain Smit Machchhar, a 38-year-old Indian pilot who was seriously wounded during the confrontation but continued fighting to protect the passengers aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073.
According to reports, Machchhar managed to alert authorities and, despite his injuries, helped open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and other crew members to intervene against the attacker.
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 was carrying 174 people on its journey from Dubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates to Tel Aviv, Israel.
The aircraft eventually landed safely at Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia. Machchhar was taken to hospital and was reported to be in stable condition as investigations continued.
A FLIGHT THAT DESCENDED THOUSANDS OF FEET
The flight departed Dubai normally, but approximately two and a half hours into the journey, the situation inside the cockpit changed dramatically.
According to accounts reported by the Associated Press and other outlets, the co-pilot attacked Machchhar with a weapon and allegedly attempted to take control of the aircraft.During the struggle, the aircraft entered a steep descent.
The plane dropped from approximately 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet in roughly a minute, according to flight-tracking information cited by the Associated Press. The severity of the descent was such that the aircraft’s rudder was reportedly damaged.
The crew declared an emergency and the aircraft’s communications indicated that the flight was dealing with a serious security incident.
Passengers inside the cabin were confronted with an extraordinary situation: the aircraft was losing altitude rapidly while a violent struggle was taking place in the cockpit.
THE INJURED CAPTAIN HELPED OPEN THE COCKPIT
Despite suffering serious injuries, Machchhar reportedly managed to open the reinforced cockpit door.
That action proved critical.Passengers and other crew members rushed toward the cockpit and helped restrain the attacker.
There were also additional pilots aboard the aircraft who had been scheduled as reserve crew because of the possibility that the flight could face longer-than-planned operations due to regional routing conditions. Those pilots ultimately helped take control of the aircraft and guide it toward a safe landing in Saudi Arabia.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Machchhar and the passengers who intervened, saying the captain’s actions helped prevent what could have become a catastrophic mid-air disaster.
However, authorities have not yet established exactly why the attack occurred or what the co-pilot intended.Investigators from Saudi Arabia, Israel, the United Arab Emirates and other countries are examining the incident.
WHO IS CAPTAIN SMIT MACHCHHAR?
Machchhar is an experienced commercial pilot who previously worked for Indian airline SpiceJet before joining Flydubai in 2022.
Reports indicate that he accumulated thousands of hours of flight experience during his aviation career, including extensive experience flying Boeing aircraft. He trained as a pilot in New Zealand, spending approximately 18 months at Mainland Air in Dunedin beginning in 2008.
Philip Kean, the head of the flight school, described Machchhar as a strong student and said the school community was proud of his actions during the emergency.
Machchhar later built his career in India before moving to Dubai after joining Flydubai. The captain is married and has two children.
Before becoming a professional pilot, Machchhar had reportedly considered joining his family’s textile business. He eventually developed an interest in aviation and changed career direction.
In a podcast interview in 2025, he spoke about the importance of remaining calm during emergencies and recalled dealing with an earlier in-flight medical emergency involving a pregnant passenger. Those experiences are now being viewed in the context of the extraordinary situation he faced aboard Flight FZ1073.
PASSENGERS RUSHED TO HELP
The emergency also placed ordinary passengers in an extraordinary position.Once the cockpit door was opened, several passengers moved toward the cockpit and helped restrain the attacker.
One passenger, identified in reports as Israeli dentist Shota Musayev, said he found the captain seriously injured and bleeding.Musayev helped treat Machchhar while other people worked to subdue the attacker.
Another passenger, Yaniv Hayun, described rushing toward the cockpit as the aircraft was descending and helping remove the attacker and stabilize the aircraft.
Their actions, together with those of the crew and reserve pilots, contributed to the aircraft eventually reaching the ground safely.
EMERGENCY LANDING IN SAUDI ARABIA
With the situation inside the aircraft brought under control, the flight diverted to Tabuk, in northwestern Saudi Arabia. The aircraft landed safely despite the damage and the injuries suffered by the captain.
Machchhar was taken to hospital in Tabuk, where he received medical treatment. The Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia said he was recovering, while Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly praised his courage.
Modi said Machchhar demonstrated courage and determination despite being seriously injured and credited his actions with helping prevent a much larger tragedy.
WHO WAS THE ATTACKER?
The co-pilot has been identified by Israeli officials as an Omani national and was arrested by Saudi authorities following the emergency landing.
However, authorities have not publicly established a definitive motive.Israeli officials have raised the possibility that the incident could have been an attempted terrorist attack, while investigations continue.
The distinction is important because the circumstances surrounding the attack remain under examination.
Flydubai has also avoided drawing conclusions about the motive, saying the reasons behind the incident remain unknown.
Investigators are expected to examine the co-pilot’s background, training, communications, actions during the flight and any possible ideological or personal motive.
FLYDUBAI SUSPENDS ISRAEL FLIGHTS
The incident has also had immediate consequences for Flydubai’s operations.Flights between the United Arab Emirates and Israel were suspended following the attack as authorities investigated what happened.
The incident occurred at a particularly sensitive time in the region, with Israeli authorities already operating under heightened security concerns.
Israeli authorities scrambled fighter jets in response to concerns that the aircraft might have been hijacked before the situation became clearer.
The passengers eventually continued their journey to Israel on another aircraft after the emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
A COCKPIT SECURITY QUESTION
The incident is likely to raise questions about cockpit security and the risks posed by threats originating from inside an aircraft rather than from passengers attempting to enter the cockpit.
Modern cockpit doors were heavily reinforced following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, making unauthorized entry from the passenger cabin extremely difficult. But Flight FZ1073 presented a very different scenario. The alleged attacker was already inside the cockpit.
That meant the reinforced cockpit door, normally designed to keep potential attackers out, became part of a much more complicated emergency when the crew and passengers needed access to the cockpit.
Aviation experts will likely examine how the incident unfolded and whether existing procedures adequately address an attack involving one pilot against another.
CAPTAIN’S ACTIONS DRAW INTERNATIONAL PRAISE
Machchhar’s actions have drawn praise from political leaders in India and Israel.Netanyahu described him as a hero, while Modi also publicly commended his courage.
The praise has focused particularly on the captain’s ability to continue acting despite severe injuries during a situation in which the aircraft itself was rapidly descending. His actions were only one part of the response, however.
The reserve pilots, cabin crew and passengers who intervened also played important roles in bringing the situation under control. The successful landing was the result of several people responding under extraordinary pressure.
INVESTIGATION CONTINUES
Despite the dramatic outcome, many questions remain unanswered.Investigators must determine precisely what happened inside the cockpit, why the co-pilot attacked the captain, how the aircraft entered such a steep descent and how the crew and passengers were able to regain control.
They will also examine the security procedures surrounding the cockpit and the circumstances that allowed the alleged attack to occur. For now, Captain Smit Machchhar remains in hospital recovering from his injuries.
What began as a routine flight carrying 174 people from Dubai to Tel Aviv could have ended in disaster. Instead, the aircraft landed safely in Saudi Arabia.
The investigation will ultimately determine the motive and full circumstances behind the attack, but the events aboard Flight FZ1073 have already highlighted the extraordinary responsibilities placed on airline crews when an emergency occurs thousands of feet above the ground.
